Lake Hickory is opening a new swimming area at the revamped Wittenburg Access area, just in time for families to cool down in the heat of summer.

The swim beach, located at 175 Wildlife Access Road, celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 29 after a years-long joint partnership between Alexander County and Duke Energy to build the new swim area.

The destination centers around a sandy beachfront overlooking Lake Hickory and includes a swim beach, outdoor showers, a changing area, restrooms, concessions, a park office, picnic shelters, a fishing pier, boat access, nature trail and more, according to the Alexander County website.

The swimming area is enclosed for patron safety with the fishing pier separate from the beach. Attendees can also enjoy a short walk on a paved path past the swim area.

There will be no lifeguard on duty, but a park attendant will be available at the concession stand to serve drinks, snacks and pre-wrapped sandwiches.

“The swim beach will give our children and families a place to play on the majestic Catawba River,” said Alexander County commissioner Marty Pennell at the grand opening. “Alexander County hopes that this park will enable families to enjoy and interact with each other for many years to come.”

According to the Alexander County Facebook page, no dogs, alcohol, smoking, glass, or fishing are permitted in the swim beach area.

“Thank you for doing this, we came Saturday [and] had so much fun,” one attendee said under the county’s Facebook post. “I like [that] it’s free, safe and clean. [Thank] you for doing this for everyone.”

The Wittenburg Access Swim Beach will be open six days a week from 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. from now through Labor Day. The beach will be closed every Wednesday.
